Supertato Returning for New Series

Supertato Returning for New Series

BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions and BBC Children’s & Education have announced that hit animated TV show Supertato is returning for a brand new series.

Based on the bestselling books by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet, the show follows the adventures of the potato superhero and his fruit and veggie sidekicks – the Tato Team – as they thwart the dastardly plans of Evil Pea who is determined to take over the supermarket forever.

The new 52 x ’7 episodes promise even more hilarious slapstick silliness as well as new fruit and veggie characters, including naughty pirate, Captain Pak Choi, a stunt Jalapeño… and even Evil Pea’s parents.

The fast-paced action is taken up a gear as Supertato gets his own Tatocar to help him save the Supermarket from Evil Pea’s increasingly ridiculous plans – from making an evil robot version of Supertato to attempting to conquer the aisles with a trolley full of stinky cheese!

Supertato is a co-production between BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions and BBC Children’s & Education. The new series lands on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer in the UK later this year.

The series first launched in the UK on CBeebies in Autumn 2022. It saw the biggest audience numbers at launch for a CBeebies show in 2022 and continues to be a top three performer for children 0-6. Supertato also airs on RTÉ in Ireland and on ABC in Australia as well as CBeebies global channels. On its official YouTube channel, Supertato has had 19.7m views and 55.8k subscribers since its launch in September 2022.

The show’s consumer product portfolio is also steadily expanding. Golden Bear’s new range of Supertato character plush toys launched at retail in July this year. The fun search-and-find book called Where’s Supertato? published by Simon & Schuster Children’s Books launched in September last year, and the Supertato The Album, launched digitally by Demon Music in 2023.

Supertato is one of a number of titles that BBC Studios Kids & Family will be taking to MIPJUNIOR this year along with The Primrose Railway Children and My Friend Maisy.

The Primrose Railway Children (1 x ’90) is a BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions feature-length family drama based on Jacqueline Wilson’s novel of the same name, which is a modern reimagining of E Nesbit’s classic, The Railway Children.

Adapted by Tom Bidwell (The Velveteen Rabbit, The Irregulars) and starring Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy, Six Four) it is a story about growing up, secrets, being displaced, and finding your way in a community that seems alien.

My Friend Maisy (52 x ‘5), is an animated pre-school series from BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions and Trustbridge Entertainment based on the books written and illustrated by Lucy Cousins, following the fantastical adventures of Maisy and her friends Tallulah, Eddie, Charley and Cyril.

Cecilia Persson, Managing Director of BBC Studios Kids & Family, says: “We’re delighted to have a new series of Supertato in our portfolio. It’s bright, bold, and colourful and kids love finding the fun and silliness in everyday things – including their fruit and veggies! The new series forms part of our standout, multi-genre slate that will capture the imagination of audiences of all ages everywhere.”
